Colt McCoy has spent five seasons with the Washington Redskins, but his time with the team appears to be coming to an end. Sunday, following the Redskins’ 47-16 loss to the Dallas Cowboys, McCoy said his goodbyes to the team and did not travel back with the team to Ashburn, Virginia, according to Craig Hoffman of 106.7 the Fan.
McCoy watched Case Keenum start at quarterback from the sidelines. McCoy appeared in just one game this season for the Redskins, starting in a Week 5 loss to the New England Patriots.
Jay Gruden was fired after the loss and McCoy was moved back to third on the Redskins depth chart in favor of Keenum and rookie Dwayne Haskins. A move that was expected given McCoy and Gruden were seemingly joined at the hip since Gruden’s arrival in 2014. Interim head coach Bill Callahan focused on the development of Haskins in the immediate aftermath of Gruden’s firing.
This was not the swansong McCoy was expecting. In 2018, he was moved into a starting role after Alex Smith suffered a career-threatening broken leg. However, McCoy’s time as the starter lasted two games as he suffered a broken fibula in a Monday Night game against the Philadelphia Eagles.
He would undergo at least three additional surgeries throughout the offseason. He entered training camp in a quarterback competition with Keenum, but suffered a setback in the middle of training camp, essentially handing over the starting job to Keenum.
McCoy worked to get active. Once he did, Gruden turned to his most-trusted option at quarterback against the Patriots in a last ditch effort to save his head coaching position. McCoy and the Redskins struggled in a 33-7 loss. As Gruden was fired, McCoy’s time with the Redskins was effectively sealed.
