Redskins reportedly expected to pursue Philip Rivers in free agency

Following a report the Washington Redskins’ interest in drafting quarterback Dwayne Haskins in the first round of this year’s NFL Draft, another report suggests the Redskins could have their sights on a veteran free agent for quarterback.

According to Tony Pauline of Pro Football Network the Redskins are expected to pursue Philip Rivers in free agency.

Rivers is not expected to re-sign with the Los Angeles Chargers after spending 16 seasons with the franchise.

There has been a lot made about how Haskins’ future with the Redskins will play out.

Recently hired head coach Ron Rivera says he will not anointed Haskins just yet. He will have to earn his spot as a starting quarterback despite being drafted in the first round a year ago.

Rivera has previously hinted towards a competition for starting quarterback, throwing in injured quarterback Alex Smith as potential competition for Haskins. However, that may seem unlikely given Smith is coming off such a career-threatening leg injury. And appears sometime away from his return.

Bringing in a veteran to help Haskins’ development makes sense. Yet, how remains a big question.

Rivers has been linked to the Indianapolis Colts and Tampa Bay Buccaneers since essentially parting ways with the Chargers. Now it appears the Redskins could at least put in an offer for him, according to Pauline.

While expectations have the Indianapolis Colts ending up with Philip Rivers, sources at the Combine tell me they expect the Washington Redskins to make a bid for the quarterback. The same sources say it will be tough for Washington to sign Rivers and it will likely take a massive contract.

At the age of 38, Rivers is coming off a down year in which he still managed to throw for 4,615 yards and completed 66 percent of his passes. However, he threw 23 touchdowns and 20 interceptions. The Chargers were on a down season with numerous injuries that led them to a 5-11 record.

Rivers under the right fit and complementary pieces may have something left in the tank as a one or two-year rental.

With Rivera entering his first year as the Redskins head coach, there is a great deal of uncertainty to how the roster will shape out. Given the recent rumors and reports, he and his staff are exploring all possible options. That may including going after Philip Rivers whether for the benefit or at expense of Haskins.
