Redskins seek ‘fair’ draft compensation for Trent Williams as list of interested teams grow

Trent Williams is available after the Washington Redskins granted the left tackle permission to seek a trade. According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, the Redskins told Williams’ agent, Vincent Taylor, they want “fair draft compensation” in return for trading the former cornerstone left tackle.

With that said, the list of teams interested is reportedly growing. The Cleveland Browns were the first team to emerge interested in the seven-time Pro Bowler. However, according to The Athletic’s Connor Hughes, the New York Jets are interested in Williams.

Prior to Hughes, The Athletic’s Ben Standig reported the Houston Texans and Arizona Cardinals are also interested in Williams according to his sources.

Williams was a hot name a year ago after he demanded a trade following his medical dispute with the Redskins training staff that led to him sitting out OTAs, training camp and the entire 2019 season. Then-team president Bruce Allen was reluctant to trade Williams initially, but Williams became available just ahead of last year’s trade deadline in October.

No deal was made, despite reports of the Browns having interest.

With Allen now out and first year head coach Ron Rivera essentially running the show, the Redskins are looking for a resolution to their year-long standoff with Williams.

Williams is seeking a new contract with a long-term commitment with whatever team is willing to trade “fair draft compensation” to the Redskins. That new deal will presumably include more guaranteed money for him.
