The Washington Redskins have announced they have exercised their fifth-year option on defensive tackle Jonathan Allen for the 2021 season. Teams have until May 3 to make their decision on first-round picks from the 2017 NFL Draft. Allen was the 17th overall pick in the draft.
Allen signed a four-year, $11.6 million rookie-scale deal. He is slated to make just over $2 million in cash in the upcoming season. The fifth-year option will boost his salary beyond that and is guaranteed for injury only.
Allen and the Redskins are still permitted to work out a long-term extension. At 25 years of age, he is primed to receive a big pay day down the line.
After having his rookie season cut short due to a Lisfranc injury, he has blossomed in each of the past two seasons, collecting a combined 14 sacks and averaging 64.5 tackles over that span.
