Trent Williams reworks deal with 49ers

Seven-time Pro Bowl left tackle Trent Williams has reworked his deal with the San Francisco 49ers. According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, Williams will receive some upfront money with the restructure, pending a physical.

Williams missed the entire 2019 season, his final season with the Washington Redskins. He had standoff with the team that included a holdout, failed physical and him being placed on non-football injury list. Williams earned zero money last season.

The standoff with the Redskins lingered into a second offseason until he was traded to the 49ers on Day 2 of this year’s NFL Draft. The 49ers sent a 2020 fifth-round pick and 2021 third-round pick to Washington.

Williams is slated to make $12.5 million on the final year of a five-year deal he signed with the Redskins. Initially, the final year had no guaranteed money.

It’s unclear if Williams sought the same type of rework deal with the Redskins. It’s worth noting, Williams had reportedly discussed a contract extension with the Minnesota Vikings before a proposed trade with the Redskins fell through.

Trent Williams is expected to be the starting left tackle for the 49ers following the retirement of Joe Staley. The reworked deal can be perceived as a good faith decision that can go a long way towards a new deal in the future with San Francisco.
