Derrius Guice arrested on domestic violence charges

The Washington Football Team running back Derrius Guice was arrested on domestic violence charges, according to the Washington Post.

Guice turned himself in to the Loudoun Adult Detention Center late Friday afternoon. He is being charged with one count of strangulation which is a felony, three counts of assault and battery and one count of destruction of property.

Guice did not participate in Friday’s training camp practice with the team.

This season was expected to be a make or break along his young NFL career. Guice was recently cleared for the 2020 season after he dealt with two significant knee injuries that limited him to five games last season. He also missed all of his rookies season in 2018 after tearing his ACL in his left knee during a preseason game.

Washington drafted Guice in the second round in 2018, looking for him to be the featured running back of the future. Unfortunately, his career has been hampered by knee issues. Washington signed veteran Adrian Peterson in place of Guice after his first injury in 2018.

Peterson has led the team in rushing each of the past two seasons.

Despite excitement surrounding his return, Guice faces tough competition with a crowded running back room. In addition to Peterson, Washington added a number of backs this offseason, drafting Antonio Gibson in the third round.

They also signed JD McKissic and Payton Barber in free agency. Last year’s draft pick Bryce Love has been cleared to play this season after sitting out his rookie season with a torn ACL.

Guice’s opportunity to re-establish his pegged position on the depth chart is now hampered with Friday’s development.

According to the Post, Guice has hired high-profile defense attorney Peter D. Greenspun. Greenspun represented DC sniper John Allen Muhammad and sportscaster Marv Albert.
