Washington Pro Bowl right guard Brandon Scherff is expected to miss 3-5 weeks with a sprained MCL, according to multiple reports. Scherff suffered the injury in the second quarter of Sunday’s loss to the Arizona Cardinals.
Washington right tackle Morgan Moses blocked Cardinals defensive end Angelo Blackson into the leg of Scherff. Scherff had to be helped off the field and did not return to the game.
Earlier Monday, Washington head coach Ron Rivera said Scherff would miss a “couple of weeks” after receiving “good news” following an MRI.
This will be the third consecutive season Scherff will miss a significant portion of the season due to injury. In 2018 he missed eight games with a torn pectoral. Last season, he missed five games with shoulder and elbow injuries.
The absence of Scherff is concerning for a Washington offensive line that has allowed the third-most pressures in the NFL through two weeks. Washington’s offense has been inept in large due to the offensive line’s inability to consistently protect quarterback Dwayne Haskins.
Wes Schweitzer replaced Scherff in the game Sunday and is the frontrunner to start during his absence. Wes Martin, the starting left guard, is the only other guard currently on Washington’s active roster. They have Joshua Garnett on the practice squad and is reportedly set to work out free agent Jeremy Vujnovich Tuesday.
Washington has the option of placing Scherff on injured reserve with the time frame expected for him being out. Scherff can be activated off the IR after three weeks, per CBA rules for the COVID-19 impacted 2020 season.
