The Washington Football Team is working out six players this week, including three running backs.
Offensive lineman Jeremy Vujnovich is the most notable name among the group of workouts. He spent the virtual off-season with Washington. However, he was released ahead of training camp, as Washington had to cut down their roster to 80 players.
Washington placed Pro Bowl right guard Brandon Scherff on injured reserve with a sprained MCL. The team may be in need of depth as they have only two guards — Wes Martin and Wes Schweitzer — on the 53-man roster.
Also notable is Washington working out three running backs — Damarea Crockett, William Stanback and Tyler Gaffney. Running back is one of the deepest positions on Washington’s roster. However, a spot on the practice squad opened up this week as the team elevated wide receiver Cam Sims to the 53-man roster. They don’t have a running back on the practice squad.
Gaffney may be the most intriguing name of the trio at running back at the age of 29. He was a sixth-round pick of the Carolina Panthers in 2014 with Ron Rivera as head coach. Injuries derailed his career and he left football in 2018 to resume his pro baseball career. After a short stint in the Pittsburgh Pirates’ minor league system, he retired from baseball in 2019.
