Jason Wright: ‘Pretty good chance’ team name remains Washington Football Team in 2021

The Washington Football Team is supposed to be a temporary name for the NFL’s Washington franchise. However, team president Jason Wright says the name could remain through next season in an interview with ABC7’s Scott Abraham.

“I think next year is fast because of how the brand has to come together through uniforms, through approval processes through the league,” Wright said. “Next year is fast. There is a pretty good chance we will still be the Washington Football Team next season. We could get there quicker, it’s actually pretty hard to get there that quickly because of all the steps that need to happen.”

Washington retired its former name and logo in July after owner Daniel Snyder faced immense pressure from corporate sponsors to change the name. The name was deemed racist and disparaging to Native Americans. The team later temporarily re-branded as “Washington Football Team.”

In September, Snyder hinted the name could become permanent, depending on fan reaction. But names such as Warriors, Redwolves and Red Tails have been popular names circulating by fans throughout social media.

Washington Football Team has received thousands of suggestions for a new permanent name, highlighted on their recently launched website washingtonjourney.com. As the process continues, fans will have to deal with being the team with no name for a bit longer.
