Ron Rivera doesn’t see Dwayne Haskins moving up from third-string QB

The future of Dwayne Haskins in Washington remains in limbo after the quarterback was benched from starter to third-string, last month. He has since been inactive in each game following his benching, sparking trade rumors. However, the NFL’s trade deadline passed on Tuesday without Haskins being moved.

Washington didn’t actively shop Haskins and the market on him was relatively quiet by multiple reports. It’s anyone’s guess to how his career in Washington will play out, but for now that won’t include moving up the team’s depth chart.

When asked if Haskins could potentially be elevated from third-string, Washington head coach Ron Rivera answered he doesn’t see any changes happening at the moment.

“I don’t see any changes right now, but I appreciate the way he is working,” Rivera said, per Ben Standig of the Athletic.

Haskins will remain behind starter Kyle Allen and backup veteran Alex Smith. Rivera has contended his staff gave Haskins plenty of time to secure the starting quarterback position. He got majority of the first-team reps in training camp, and started the first four games of the season.

Unfortunately, he struggled showing he needs more seasoning before he can be tabbed a franchise quarterback. Being benched allows him to develop through practice with hopes of getting another chance to start.

Allen will continue to lead the team as they vie for an NFC East title this season. Smith is further along than Haskins in the coaching staff’s eye. Thus, Haskins will be relegated to developing as the No. 3 QB in Washington, for now.
