Washington Football Team has named rookie defensive end Chase Young as a team captain. Young is just 21 years of age, but veterans such as quarterback Alex Smith and fellow defensive end Ryan Kerrigan has raved about his leadership and maturity.
Young has been a catalyst for Washington’s ongoing culture change under head coach Ron Rivera. Both on and off the field, Young, the second overall pick this year, has spearheaded a turnaround in Washington’s defense that has them ranked fourth in the NFL in yards allowed entering Week 16.
Young replaces quarterback Dwayne Haskins as a captain. Haskins had his captaincy revoked by head coach Ron Rivera as punishment for violating COVID-19 protocols.
Last Sunday, Haskins attended a party without a mask where strippers were in attendance. Haskins was also fined a whopping $40,000.
Haskins was named the starting quarterback and captain prior to the season. However, he was benched for poor play after starting four games this year. He was also fined by the team earlier this season for violating COVID-19 protocols, booking a room for a friend at the same hotel as the team ahead of their Week 6 game at the New York Giants.
While Haskins is focused on his own irresponsible behavior, Young, who is two years younger than Haskins, has been officially appointed the role of leading the locker room.
Young joins wide receiver Terry McLaurin, defensive tackle Jonathan Allen, right guard Brandon Scherff and quarterback Alex Smith as team captains. Smith was also named a captain, replacing injured safety Deshazor Everett, who was placed on injured reserve last week.
