Maryland’s leading tackler Chance Campbell enters transfer portal

Maryland football’s leading tackler linebacker Chance Campbell is entering the transfer portal. Campbell made his official announcement Monday via Twitter.

Campbell had a breakout junior season in 2020. He led the team with 43 tackles in five games, adding 5.5 tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks. He was named honorable mention All-Big Ten. His highlight play of the year was a 34-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown in Maryland’s stunning win over Penn State.

Campbell is set to graduate as a junior which will allow him to seek immediate eligibility as a graduate-transfer.

Campbell joins three other Maryland starters to transfer this offseason. Offensive linemen Marcus Minor and Johnny Jordan as well as safety Antwaine Richardson entered the transfer portal in December. Coincidentally, all four came to Maryland under former head coach DJ Durkin.

It’s unclear why Campbell is opting to leave Maryland. Yet, his loss is significant for the Terrapins, as far as experience. However, the team will have a solid backup plan. Campbell’s departure paves the way for incoming five-star recruit Terrence Lewis to pair next to returning freshman Ruben Hyppolite. Lewis is the No. 1 rated inside linebacker in the nation out of Miami Central.
