Thomas Bryant has successful surgery on ACL

Washington Wizards center Thomas Bryant had successful surgery on his partially torn ACL Tuesday, head coach Scott Brooks announced.

Bryant suffered the injury on Jan. 9 as he landed awkwardly coming down for a rebound against the Miami Heat. His loss has been a huge blow for the Wizards.

Bryant was on pace of having a breakout season. He was averaging a career-high 14.3 points while shooting a career-bests 64.8% from the field and 42.9% from three.

Robin Lopez has filled in as the starting center so far in Bryant’s absence. In six starts since Bryant’s injury, Lopez is averaging 9.8 points and 5.3 rebounds. He is shooting 69.4% from the field, but taking just six shots per game.

The Wizards also signed former Maryland Terrapin Alex Len. Len has split backup minutes with Moe Wagner.

Bryant is expected to return next season. He’ll be in a contract year upon his return, looking to bounce back from an ACL injury while proving his worth for a new contract.
