Washington Football Team signs linebacker David Mayo, center Tyler Larson

The Washington Football Team has signed linebacker David Mayo and center Tyler Larson, the team announced Thursday. While the two signings may not move the excitement meter for most fans, they could be key signings down the road.

Both Mayo and Larsen are former Carolina Panthers, who played under current Washington head coach Ron Rivera.

LB David Mayo

A fifth-round pick in 2015, Mayo spent four seasons in Carolina before landing with the New York Giants, where he spent the past two seasons.

The 27-year old has appeared in 89 games throughout his career. He is still young and has potential. In 2019, he started 13 games for the Giants as a linebacker, recording 82 tackles, two sacks, two passes defense and one fumble recovery. Last season, he appeared in 11 games with two starts and playing in 18% of the Giants’ defensive snaps.

Washington is looking to revamp their linebacker position. In addition, they lost Kevin Pierre-Louis, who signed a two-year deal with the Houston Texans.

Center Tyler Larsen

Meanwhile, Larsen adds depth to Washington’s offensive line. Larsen, 29, has primarily been a backup throughout his career. Before landing in Carolina in 2016, Larsen spent training camps with the Miami Dolphins and Washington in 2014 and 2015, respectively.

Larsen has appeared in 68 games with 18 starts — all of which came with the Panthers.

Mayo and Larsen adds to the plethora of former Panthers players, coaches and executive whom have joined Washington since the 2020 hiring of Rivera. That has included wide receiver Curtis Samuel, who signed a three-year deal on Thursday as well.
