Washington signs Jonathan Allen massive $72 million contract extension

The Washington Football Team has signed defensive tackle Jonathan Allen to a massive four-year contract extension worth $72 million. The deal includes a $30 million signing bonus. Allen’s agency Team IFA announced the deal.

Allen reacted to the signing by tweeting “Washington for life!!”

Allen will play out the 2021 season on his fifth-year option of his rookie deal at $10.05 million. Both Allen and Washington set out to hammer a long-term deal ahead of training camp. Just as players are set to report this week, the two sides got a deal done that will keep him in Washington through the 2025 season.

Through his first four seasons, Allen has been a consistent cog in the middle of Washington’s defense, recording 17 sacks. He’s played in 47 of 48 games in the past three seasons. He’s emerged as a captain and leader of the team through his maturity.

Adding Allen also ensures Washington’s talented and stacked defensive line will stay intact for at least two more seasons. Washington has already exercised fellow defensive tackle Daron Payne’s fifth-year option for 2022 season.

Their decision on a fifth-year option for defensive end Montez Sweat will be due in March of next year for the 2023. Then, 2020 Defensive Rookie of the Year Chase Young’s decision will be due the following offseason.

With Allen in tow Washington’s front office has a building block for their young defense as they move forward.
