Washington Football Team president explains why team hasn’t rushed to pick new name

It’s been more than one year since the Washington Football Team dropped it’s old moniker and logo and announced plans of a permanent name. Yet, that permanent name has yet to be revealed.

The prolonged time frame of sorting through a name change has many fans wondering what’s taking the franchise so long to pick a name?

Speaking to announcers Kenny Albert and Joe Theismann during the NBC4’s TV broadcast of Friday’s preseason game against the Cincinnati Bengals, Washington’s team president Jason Wright explained why the team hasn’t rushed to pick a new name.

“You can pick one out of a hat and then be in court for 10 years trying to trademark it,” Wright said per Ben Standig of The Athletic. “You can pick one out of a hat and then realize it means something you didn’t realize it meant. More importantly, this renaming is about stewarding people’s memories. There’s people who watches you play, Joe, with their parents, with their grandparents, with their loved ones, and so we’ve got to take our time to make it right.”

Earlier this week, the narrowed the list of potential names down to three without revealing those choices. The eight names displayed during the three-minute plus video, weren’t particular indicative of the selection process.

Meanwhile, the Cleveland Indians of Major League Baseball have already revealed their new name, the Guardians, despite starting the process of their re-branding after Washington.

In the meantime, Washington is going by the temporary name of the Washington Football Team. The franchise is still on track to reveal their new and permanent name in early 2022. Hopefully when the time comes, there will be more satisfied fans than not.
