Referees miss blatant facemask by Chargers defender against Washington

The Washington Football Team scored its first points on the 2021 NFL season off a 30-yard field goal from kicker Dustin Hopkins. The six-play drive stalled after third down. But, Washington has an argument the drive should have been longer.

The officials missed a blatant facemask by Los Angeles Chargers defensive lineman Justin Jones. Jones hooked the facemask of Washington running back Antonio Gibson, dragging him down to the ground while holding it.

Fans inside FedEx Field, the home stadium of Washington, voiced their displeasure for the missed call. And rightfully so.  The play in question came a play after Gibson broke a 27-yard gain.

Washington should have had an automatic first down from the 8-yard line. Instead, they settled for 2nd-and-13 from the Chargers’ 20-yard line because of the missed call.

Washington’s drive stalled after a short scramble by quarterback Ryna Fitzpatrick on third down. Hopkins was able to get three points on the board. But, Washington surely should have had a chance to add more.
