Saahdiq Charles, Sammis Reyes Among Washington’s Week 1 inactives

The Washington Football Team sat down five players for Sunday’s season-opener against the Los Angeles Chargers. Among the list not dressed is rookie tight end Sammis Reyes and last year’s draft pick, offensive lineman Saahdiq Charles.

Saahdiq Charles inactive to start Year 2

As a fourth-round pick in 2020, Charles joined Washington with high expections. However, the start to his career has been stalled. Multiple injuries held off his NFL debut until Week 6. It lasted two snaps before he suffered a season-ending knee injury.

Now, Year 2 starts with him being inactive much like last season.

Sammis Reyes is a surprising but understandable scratch

Meanwhile for Reyes was a pleasant surprise in training camp, earning a spot on the 53-man roster. The first Chile-born player in NFL history, landed in Washington via the International Player Pathway Program.

Considered as one of Washington’s best physical blockers, some may be more shocked he isn’t dressing in Week 1. Keep in mind, Reyes is considered a long-term project. Holding him off the field longer until he is truly ready makes a lot of sense.

Other Inactives

Other inactives for Washington include quarterback Kyle Allen, cornerback Darryl Roberts and rookie defensive end Shaka Toney. None of which are surprising.

Allen is returning from a gruesome ankle injury suffered in Week 9 of last season. He tweaked the surgically-repaired ankle during training camp, and slid a distance behind starting quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick and backup Taylor Heinicke.

There isn’t much snaps at defensive end behind studs Chase Young and Montez Sweat. Toney made the 53-man roster, but remains behind reserves James Smith-Williams and Casey Toohill.

Washington is stacked at defensive back. The have three formidable cornerbacks in Kendall Fuller, Williams Jackson III and Benjamin St-Juste. Not to mention, they’ll play either or both safeties Bobby McCain and Kam Curl as their Buffalo slot corner in nickel packages.
