Maryland senior wide receiver Dontay Demus Jr. is out for the remainder of the season with a knee injury, head coach Mike Locksley announced Tuesday, per Scott Greene of Rivals.com. Demus will fly to Alabama to undergo surgery later this week.
Demus was injured during a second quarter kickoff return Friday against Iowa. His leg twisted awkwardly, causing him to fumble the football. After being attended to, he was carted off the field in which he was seen yelling “I’m coming back!”
Locksley did not specify the nature of the injury. Nevertheless, Maryland loses its best player thus far this season.
Demus had 28 catches and led the Big Ten with 507 receiving yards through five weeks of the season. He also had three touchdowns.
He was building momentum towards being one of the top prospects at wide receiver in the upcoming 2022 NFL Draft.
With Demus out, Rakim Jarrett and Jeshaun Jones will be the top receiving targets of quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa.
