Fresh off becoming bowl eligible with their blowout win Saturday over Rutgers, Maryland was delivered a blow. Running back Peny Boone announced he is departing the Terrapins program.
Boone thanked head coach Mike Locksley for giving him the opportunity for the past two seasons.
Peny Boone committed to Maryland in 2020 as a four-star running back out of Detroit, Michigan. He was highly herald as a 6-foot-2 245-pound bruiser. However, his two years in College Park have been up and down.
As a freshman last year, had a meager 19 carries for 86 yards. He underwent offseason shoulder surgery. Still there were high expectations going into the 2021 season as a sophomore.
Yet, Boone slipped down the depth chart behind former walk-on Challen Fa’aamatu and freshman Colby McDonald.
Boone was relegated as a power and short-yardage runner. He carried the ball 39 times — fourth among Maryland running backs. That’s despite averaging 4.4 yards per carry.
Boone becomes the second Maryland running back to leave the program. Fellow 2020 recruiting classmate Isaiah Jacobs entered the transfer portal earlier this month.
