Ron Rivera calls hit that injured Logan Thomas ‘avoidable’

An MRI on Washington Football Team tight end Logan Thomas came back better than the team initially feared, according to head coach Ron Rivera. But the fact remains, Thomas suffered a significant knee injury.

It appears Thomas avoided tearing his ACL. However, he will undergo further testing to confirm the extent of the injury.

Thomas was hit low on a fourth quarter run in Washington’s 17-15 win over the Las Vegas Raiders.

Raiders defensive end Yannick Ngakoue tried to avoid a block from Thomas, who was pulling across the formation. Ngakoue hit Thomas with low, hyperextending Thomas’ knee.

According to Rivera the hit that injured Thomas was “avoidable.”

“You know, I thought the play was avoidable. It’s unfortunate that the hit occurred and it was low,” Rivera said per Nicki Jhabvala of the Washington Post. “For the most part, I just felt that it was something that was avoidable.”

It’s hard to argue against Rivera’s comments. While it may have been avoidable, the hit was legal. Defensive ends go low often at blockers, particularly tight ends. Tight ends use a similar technique as long the player being hit is in the tackle box and is not already engaged in a block.

Nevertheless, Thomas’ injury is certainly unfortunate. Hopefully, he’ll be back on the field in no time. We’ll have to wait and see when more information on the injury is revealed.
