Logan Thomas knee injury may be better than initially expected

The knee injury to Washington Football Team tight end Logan Thomas may not be as bad as feared. Washington head coach Ron RIvera said an MRI revealed Thomas did not tear his ACL. However, there is some damage to his knee, and they’ll need further tests to confirm the extent of the injury.

“The MRI results came back, they were better than we had anticipated,” Rivera told reporter per Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post. “There is some damage there. It’s not as extensive as we first thought, so we’re sending for a few more tests just to make sure, and we’ll go from there. So, we’re still waiting on a little bit more of an evaluation. But, it is a little more positive than we first anticipated.”

Thomas was injured in the fourth quarter of Sunday’s win at the Las Vegas Raiders. Raiders defensive end Yannick Ngakoue chopped Thomas at the knees on a low block.

The play wasn’t flagged and considered legal, as low blocks are permitted inside the tackle box.

Washington reportedly initially feared Thomas tore his ACL and MCL. While he avoids torn ligaments, the injury still could be significant. It’s unclear if he will be able to return at any point this season.

Washington has five games remaining on the regular season schedule.

A breakthrough season last year, Thomas inked a three-year $24 million contract extension this offseason. He entered the 2021 season with high expectations. Unfortunately, he missed six games with a hamstring injury.

Thomas returned in Week 12 against the Seattle Seahawks. Sunday against the Raiders, Thomas had three catches for 48 and a spectacular one-handed touchdown catch.

Washington will await confirmation on the specific injury to Thomas and his recovery time frame.
