It doesn’t take much to get fired up about Dallas-Washington week. Yet, Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy may have added a bit more fuel to the fire.
McCarthy pretty much guaranteed a win for his Cowboys.
“We’re going to win this game,” McCarthy said per Michael Gehlken of the Dallas Morning News. “I’m confident in that.”
Washington head coach Ron Rivera is sure to thank McCarthy for the bulletin board material. But McCarthy has no qualms about his statement.
“What am I supposed to say?” McCarthy said. “I fully expect to win every game I’ve ever competed in.”
In reality, McCarthy is right. There aren’t many coaches who enter a game not confident his team will win. That’s no matter the circumstances. In this case, the Cowboys are considered the favorites.
Dallas sports an 8-4 record and are in the first-place of the NFC East. Yes, they’ve struggled as of late and trending in the wrong direction. However, their struggles can be blamed on injuries and a COVID-19 outbreak that has held out star players like wide receivers Amari Cooper and Ceedee Lamb.
Washington is coming in red hot despite a 6-6 record. They are sporting a four-game win streak — the longest in the NFC. The Football Team should be confident even without McCarthy’s bulletin board material.
McCarthy’s guarantee won’t win or lose the game for either side. But, it does add to rivalry and will be remembered by media ad fans regardless of Sunday’s outcome.
