Maryland men’s basketball assistant coach suspended 30 days

Maryland men’s basketball assistant coach Bruce Shingler has been suspended for 30 days, the school announced prior to the Terrapins’ 94-87 win over Northwestern Wednesday.

The school did not disclose the reason for the suspension, citing Shingler was suspended “for a violation of his employment agreement.”

Maryland Athletics declined further comment during the announcement.

The 40-year old Shingler is in his first year with Maryland. He was hired by former head coach Mark Turgeon prior to the season.

Shingler previously served on Frank Martin’s staff at South Carolina before coming to Maryland. He was part of the Gamecocks run to the 2017 Final Four. He also was an assistant for four seasons at Towson.

Shingler has ties to the DC area, once coaching AAU team DC Assault. He also has ties with DC Premier and Team Takeover in the area.

The suspension adds to the turmoil this season for the Terrapins. Turgeon and Maryland mutually agreed to part ways in December eight games into the season.

Danny Manning, who is also in his first year at Maryland, has served as interim coach since Turgeon’s departure. With the win against Northwestern, the Terps are 4-4 under Manning.
