Duke poaches Maryland WR coach to be passing game coordinator

Duke first-year head coach Mike Elko has poached Maryland wide receiver coach to join his coaching staff. The Blue Devils announced Sunday they have hired Zohn Burden to be their passing game coordinator and wide receivers coach.

Burden spent the 2021 season as Maryland’s wide receiver coach under head coach Mike Locksley.

With the Terrapins, Burden coached a group that started the season led by the outstanding duo of Dontay Demus Jr. and Rakim Jarrett. Demus suffered a season-ending knee injury in October against Iowa. At the time of his injury, Demus led the Big Ten in receiving yards.

Maryland also lost its No. 3 receiver Jeshaun Jones to a season-ending knee injury the game after Demus’ injury. Thus, Maryland had to reach deep down their depth chart at receiver.

Still, Maryland had six different receivers have at least 300 yards on the season. Seven different receivers caught a touchdown.

Before his lone season at Maryland, Burden was most recently the wide receivers coach at Virginia Tech in 2015 before becoming the Hokies running backs coach from 2016-2019.
