Recapping the double overtime thriller between the Spurs and Wizards

The first game back from the All-Star break for the Washington Wizards and San Antonio Spurs turned into a double-overtime thriller.

1. Spurs had game under control in regulation

The Spurs appeared headed to a win in regulation. Dejounte Murray put Wizards rookie Corey Kispert on his heels before making an elbow jumper that extended the Spurs’ lead to eight with 1:20 remaining.

2. Wizards rally down eight in final minute

But the Wizards responded with an 8-0 rally in the final 1:14 of the fourth quarter. Kentavious Caldwell-Pope made a driving layup that tied the game at 130-130 with 19.4 seconds remaining to ultimately send the game into overtime. 

3. Lonnie Walker IV was in his bag early in OT

In overtime, Spurs guard Lonnie Walker IV was in his bag early on. He scored seven straight points for San Antonio. That included a stepback three and this driving dunk along the baseline as Wizards forward Kyle Kuzma made a business decision.

4. Dejounte Murray clutch in OT

However, the Wizards stayed within range in the back-and-forth tussle. But once again Murray stepped up with a clutch bucket. This time he drained a three from the wing with 25.6 seconds remaining to put the Spurs ahead 145-143.

5. Raul Neto responds for the Wizards to send game into double OT

Once again the Wizards snatched victory from the hands of defeat when guard Raul Neto drove through the Spurs defense for an uncontested layup to tie the game at 145-145.

6. Wacky play ends in Daniel Gafford three-point play

In double overtime, the Wizards stole momentum when they somehow got points off this wacky play. 

After the Wizards were done playing hot potato with the basketball, center Daniel Gafford got the And-1 layup to break the 147-147 tie. Gafford made the free throw to complete the three-point play. Washington led 150-147 with 3:46 remaining in the second overtime. 

7. Wizards go ice cold and Murray comes through clutch again

However, the Wizards went scoreless for the next 3:26. Meanwhile, the Spurs battled back, going on an 8-0. For the third time in the game, Murray scored a clutch bucket. 

San Antonio led 153-150. After a Caldwell-Pope missed three, Murray dropped his 14th dime of the game to Jakob Poeltl, who dropped the dagger with a close-range bucket with 28.2 remaining.

The Spurs hung on for the 157-153 thrilling win.

8. Recapping the double overtime thriller

Murray put the finishing touches on the game with a pair of late free throws. He finished the game with 31 points on 12-of-20 shooting from the field, 14 assists and 13 rebounds for his 17th triple-double of the season.

Spurs forward Keldon Johnson led the team with 32 points while adding seven rebounds. Poeltl finished with 27 points and 11 rebounds. Walker had 23 points off the bench.

Kuzma had a game-high 36 points for the Wizards. Neto had a strong game with 22 points and nine assists. Caldwell-Pope had 24 points.

The Wizards fall to 27-32 on the season. The Spurs are now 24-36.
