Patrick Ewing ‘hoping’ to return as Georgetown head coach

Sunday’s loss to Connecticut was the 18th straight for the Georgetown Hoyas. Georgetown is now 0-17 in the Big East Conference, clinching a last-place finish, it’s first since the conference started in 1979.

Fan morale is its lowest in decades. There’s an outcry from disgruntled fans for the removal of head coach Patrick Ewing.

Ewing is in his fifth year leading the program he starred at as a player. The Hoyas haven’t won more than 15 games in a season but once. Georgetown this season is 6-22 overall.

Following the Hoyas’ 86-77 loss, Ewing was asked about his future as head coach.

“Of course I want to be back here, but in this position, in this job, whatever happens will happen,” Ewing responded, per Gene Wang of The Washington Post. “I’m hoping I’ll be back and doing something that I love at a place that I love and getting us back to being the king of the hill.”

Last year, the Hoyas turned a ninth-place finish in the regular season into an improbable run to win the Big East tournament, earning an automatic NCAA tournament bid.

This season has shown no signs of a repeat run. The Hoyas just don’t have the horses to compete in a stacked Big East.

Ewing replaced the dismissed John Thompson III, the son of the legendary John Thompson Jr., in 2017. Keeping the head coach job in the family seemed ideal at the time. But, Ewing has struggled to return Georgetown back to prominence.

Barring a miraculous repeat run in two weeks in the Big East tournament, Ewing’s teams will miss the NCAA tournament for the fourth time in five seasons. It’s not looking good. His future has led to much debate. Can Ewing survive the outcry for his job and return for next season?
