The Washington Commanders are bringing back defensive back Troy Apke on a one-year deal. His agency, JL Sports announced the agreement.
Terms of the deal were undisclosed.
Troy Apke has developed as a special team ace for Washington. Drafted in the fourth round in 2018, Apke made an immediate impact on special teams.
In 2020, he beat out Sean Davis for a starting free safety to start the season. However, Apke struggled mightily and was ultimately benched. He started seven games that season and played 441 defensive snaps.
Last season, he was worked out at cornerback during training camp and preseason. Yet he did not have a single snap on defense, playing 356 snaps on special teams.
Bringing back Apke gives Washington insurance on special teams, particularly with the status of Deshazor Everett unclear.
Apke has appeared in 50 games, registering 68 tackles, one interception and one fumble recovery.
