In a plot twist, running back J.D. McKissic has changed his mind. A day after agreeing to a two-year, $7 million deal with the Buffalo Bills, McKissic has decided to re-sign with the Washington Commanders on the same deal he had with Buffalo, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
McKissic’s return is refreshing for Washington. He had 123 catches in two seasons in a Washington uniform, including 80 during the 2020 season. He emerged as a great receiving option out of the backfield as well as an exceptional pass protector.
Washington initially allowed McKissic to test the market at the start of the legal tampering period. But with the intention of getting a chance to match any offer. That originally did not happen, as McKissic agreed to move on to Buffalo.
However, in the 11th hour before free agency officially starts, Washington worked to convince McKissic to return.
It was more surprising he chose to move on before today. McKissic’s career stalled to get off the ground in Seattle and Detroit. But he found his footing in Washington and had his best two seasons of his career.
In 27 games with Washington, McKissic had 1,563 yards from scrimmage and seven total touchdowns.
Now, he gets two more years to thrive in an offense that suits him best. McKissic will rejoin Antonio Gibson to provide a 1-2 punch in the backfield.
