J.D. McKissic is really leaving Washington for $7M over two years with the Bills

While the Washington Commanders have been idle early-on in free agency, they’ve lost a handful of notable players. None may be more valuable than running back J.D. McKissic.

Mckissic has agreed to a two-year, $7 million deal with the Buffalo Bills, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

The money value is shocking. Washington wanted to retain McKissic, but like all of their other free agents, they allowed him to talk to other teams as  they searched for a quarterback. Leading into the legal tampering period, it became evident McKissic was headed elsewhere.

Still, Washington couldn’t afford $7 million over two years for it’s best pass-catching running back?

The six-year pro had his best two seasons in Washington. In 2020 he hauled in 80 catches for 589 yards and two touchdowns. Last season, he had 43 catches for 397 yards and two touchdowns in 11 games before a Week 12 neck injury ended his season. He also dded 597 rushing yards and three touchdowns during his time in Washington.

What led to McKissic walking in free agency to Buffalo? The Bills are Super Bowl contenders. An opportunity to play with Josh Allen and win a ring is more appealing.

Washington’s newly acquired quarterback Carson Wentz has a reputation of not choosing the easy throws and utilizing his running backs in the passing game. Could that be a reason to bolt?

Was he just like Brandon Scherff and simply wanted to get out of Washington?

One thing is sure, losing McKissic is a big loss for the Commanders. His pass protection was vital for the passing game. With McKissic out, the Commanders are sure to either give feature back Antonio Gibson more of a workload, look for a replacement in the coming days of free agency or draft young third-down back.
