The Ohio State football program and the NFL is still reeling following the tragic death of former Buckeyes quarterback Dwayne Haskins on Saturday. Haskins had the greatest single season in Ohio State history in 2018.
The outpouring of tributes for Haskins rang throughout the Ohio State football family and the NFL on social media. At Ohio Stadium, the home field of the Buckeyes, fans have built a memorial along the gates.
Adam Whitman, an Ohio State student, paid his respects to Haskins by playing a beautiful rendition of “Carmen Ohio” with his violin.
It was a sorrowing but touching tribute by Whitman. The sound of the violin paints the emotions of many following the untimely death of the 24-year old Haskins.
Dwayne Haskins threw for 4,831 yards, 50 touchdowns and eight interceptions during the 2018 season. He went on to play in the NFL, getting drafted by the Washington Commanders in the first round. There he played two years before being released in 2020 and ultimately signing with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Haskins was struck by a dump truck while walking along I-595 in South Florida. He was pronounced dead at the scene. He was in Florida training with his Steelers teammates.
Yet, he was most revered by Ohio State fans. He became a Buckeyes legend at Columbus. More importantly he became part of OSU’s family. That family has poured out its hearts mourning one of theirs.
Just read the tweet of Ohio State receiver Garrett Wilson, who is expected to be a first-round pick in this year’s draft.
Wilson came to Ohio State after Haskins declared for the NFL. Such admiration will keep Haskins in high regard there for ages.
