Parents of Dwayne Haskins explain why they didn’t attend funeral in Pittsburgh

Funeral services were held Friday in Pittsburgh for Steelers quarterback Dwayne Haskins. However, his parents — Dwayne Sr. and Tamara Haskins — were not at the services. Instead they’ll hold two memorial services over the weekend. The first will be Saturday in New Jersey, where he was born. The second will be Sunday at Bullis School in Maryland, where the QB starred in high school.

Prior to Friday’s funeral Haskins’ parents released a statement via Darren M. Haynes of WUSA-9 in Washington, D.C.

“We have never met or spoken to the wife, and we didn’t want our son’s funeral service to be the place we met her for the first time.”

Dwayne Jr. and his wife Kalabrya were married in March 2021. During Friday’s services Kalabrya was seen emotional and uttering words throughout the funeral, according to TMZ Sports. She later released a dove next to the casket of Dwayne Jr.

Haskins’ former head coach at Ohio State, Urban Meyer, was among those who attended the service. Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin and a number of teammates were there.

Haskins’ body will be transferred to New Jersey for Saturday’s service.

Haskins lived in Highland Park, N.J. but moved to Potomac, Maryland in ninth grade. After his record-breaking season at Ohio State in 2018, Haskins was drafted in the first round by the Washington Commanders in 2019.

The QB played two seasons in Washington before he was released in December 2020. He signed with the Steelers the following January and served as the third-string QB during the 2021 season. He re-signed a one-year deal last month with the Steelers.

Haskins was struck and killed by a dump truck and another car while walking on I-595 in South Florida the morning of April 9. He was in Florida working out with some of his Steelers teammates.

Dwayne Haskins Jr. was 24 years of age.
