The death of Dwayne Haskins last week shook the sports world. On Saturday, Ohio State honored its former quarterback during its spring game.
Their helmets featured a decal on each helmet, reading “DH.”
Meanwhile, Ohio State’s current quarterback C.J. Stroud went a step further, wearing Haskins No. 7 jersey.
Dwayne Haskins became an Ohio State legend for his remarkable 2018 season in which he broke the school’s records with 4,831 passing yards and 50 touchdowns. Both are also Big Ten records.
Haskins led Ohio State to a 13-1 record that season, winning the Rose Bowl. But, his imprint carried on even after he declared for the 2019 NFL Draft and became the first Buckeyes QB to be selected in the first round in 37 years.
His successor, Justin Fields, credits Haskins for starting the path for the elite passers to choose Ohio State. Fields transferred to Ohio State from Georgia and became the starting QB in 2019.
Fields was drafted in the first round in 2021. Stroud followed Fields. Stroud also wears the No. 7 at Ohio State.
Stroud joined Haskins as the only Ohio State quarterbacks to throw for 4,000 yards. Saturday’s tribute was touching. It also showed how much Haskins is loved in Columbus by fans, players before him, teammates, and players after.
