Maryland-transfer Ashley Owusu commits to Virginia Tech

Now former Maryland guard Ashley Owusu shocked the women’s college basketball world when she announced she was entering the transfer portal. Owusu indirectly sparked a mass exodus from the Brenda Frese-led Terrapins squad which included leading scorer Angel Reese.

Late Saturday evening Owusu announced she is transferring to Virginia Tech.

Owusu’s decision to play for the Hokies isn’t as surprising as her initial intent to transfer.

She had cited “unfortunate events off the court” as her reason to leave Maryland. Owusu is a native of Woodbridge, Virginia. She starred at Paul VI Catholic High School before committing to Maryland in 2019 as a five-star recruit and the No. 7 player nationally.

Ashley Owusu was the No. 2 among Charlie Creme’s transfer portal list of undecided players. Only Reese was ranked higher.

Her decision was going to be to stay local. Georgetown and Virginia are on the mends while Virginia Tech is more of an established women program. Last year, the Hokies finished fifth in the ACC and was a fifth-seed in the NCAA Tournament before being upset by Florida Gulf Coast.

Last season, Owusu averaged 14.3 points and 3. assists shooting 42.4% from the field.
