There was a lot made about Chase Young and to some degree Montez Sweat skipping OTAs last season. So much that Washington Commanders head coach Ron Rivera emphasized the expectations that the pass rushing duo, particularly Young, would attend this year’s sessions.
However, neither were present during the start of this week’s session. Following the first practice Tuesday, Rivera explained the duo’s absence.
Rivera explained Young is rehabbing his torn ACL in Colorado. The 2020 Defensive Rookie of the Year is expected to “eventually” return to the team for some portion of the OTAs. Meanwhile, Sweat was excused for personal reasons and is expected back on Wednesday.
Keep in mind, these sessions are still voluntary. Also, both Young and Sweat were at Phase One of the offseason program in April.
Young suffered a torn ACL last season in Week 9 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The knee injury ended a disappointed sophomore season for Young. He finished the 2021 season with a meager 1.5 sacks.
Sweat had a better on field year last season. He had 5.0 sacks. However, he missed a month with a broken jaw. He also missed time with COVID-19 and following the death of his older brother.
Being at OTAs is important and a great look for players. But given the two were with the team in April, it’s not as concerning whether either weren’t there Tuesday or beyond.
Mandatory minicamp isn’t until June 14.
The circumstances are different from last year. Young is rehabbing a serious knee injury in hopes of being ready to play at or near the start of the regular season. Sweet only missed a portion of OTAs a year ago. His absence Tuesday was excused.
