Commanders’ Antonio Gandy-Golden retiring after two seasons in NFL

The second day of the Washington Commanders training camp produced a shocking surprise. Following practice, head coach Ron Rivera announced that converted tight end Antonio Gandy-Golden has decided to retire and plans to go back to school, per Ben Standig of the Athletic.

Washington selected Gandy-Golden in the fourth round of the 2020 NFL Draft. He was a breakout star at Liberty, recording three consecutive 1,000-yard seasons as a wide receiver. He also snagged 29 touchdown catches his final three seasons in college.

Unfortunately, his NFL career never quite got off the ground. A hamstring injury marred his rookie season, limiting him to six games.

Last year, he was released during final cuts prior to the regular season. But, he was later re-signed to the Commanders’ practice squad before being elevated and signed to the active roster.

After struggling his first two seasons as a wide receiver, Gandy-Golden was slated to convert to tight end going into this year’s training camp.

As it stands, Gandy-Golden finishes his NFL career with one catch for three yards in 10 games. He also had a 22-yard run during his rookie season.

Logan Thomas is pegged to be the primary starting tight end. However, he started training camp on the physically unable to perform list as he works back from a torn ACL. Washington also has John Bates, Sammis Reyes and this year’s fifth-round draft pick Cole Turner at the top of the tight end depth chart.
