Juan Soto trade speculation sparked with handshake between Nats, Cardinals execs

The term “act accordingly” doesn’t apply this time of year in the MLB. The Aug. 2 trade deadline is fastly approaching, and any movement, word, or reaction is followed by a whirlwind of speculations. Sunday’s game between the Washington Nationals and Saint Louis Cardinals was no exemption.

Nationals president of baseball operations and general manager Mike Rizzo was seen shaking hands with the Cardinals president of baseball operations John Mozeliak. Their interaction sparked hysteria among onlookers if a Juan Soto trade was imminent.

The Cardinals have been named one of three finalists in the running to acquire Soto from the Nationals in a blockbuster trade. NL West rivals, the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres were also reportedly listed in the hunt for Soto.

The Nationals have vetted trade packages from interested teams. A deal between Washington and St. Louis most likely will include Cardinals second baseman Nolan Gorman among other top prospects. But, let’s pipe down the excitement from Rizzo and Mozeliak’s handshake.

Soto may indeed land in St. Louis before Tuesday’s deadline. However, it’s safe to assume a Soto trade wasn’t finalized on live television for the rest of the world to see. So, Nationals and Cardinals fans and everyone else can calm down a little, at least until Tuesday.
