Commanders place DE Bunmi Rotimi on injured reserve

The Washington Commanders placed defensive end Bunmi Rotimi on injured reserve, according to Nicki Jhabvala of the Washington Post. The IR placement effectively ends his season with Washington.

Rotimi suffered a leg injury in Washington’s preseason loss to the Kansas City Chiefs on Saturday. He had been competing for a roster spot. By most accounts, he had a good training camp coming off the edge.

The 27-year old Rotimi is a native of Alexandria, Virginia, just outside of Washington, D.C. He attended high school at West Potomac (VA) before playing collegiately at Old Dominion in Norfolk, Virginia.

Rotimi spent most of last season on the Commanders practice squad before being activated and signed to the 53-man roster in November. He appeared in nine games recording his first career sack in the process.

With Rotimi out, the Commanders still have great depth at defensive end behind stars Montez Sweat and Chase Young, who is on the PUP list following a torn ACL suffered last year.

Washington has Casey Toohill, James Smith-Williams, Efe Obada, William Bradley-King, Shaka Toney and Jacub Panasiuk among the remaining edge rusher options.
