Flowers edges Wise in overtime

C.H. Flowers continued its perfect season by edging Wise 16-13 in overtime. The Jaguars snapped its 10-year losing streak to Wise with the win.

Both teams entered the game undefeated while coming off shutout victories a week ago. Wise stomped Oxon Hill 61-0, and Flowers throttled Laurel 37-0.

On Saturday, it was Flowers surviving the battle of the undefeated, improving to 6-0 on the season. With the win, the Jaguars take an early claim as the top team in the Prince George’s County 4A Region.

Wise falls to 5-1 on the season with the loss. Penalties were the theme of the game for the Pumas. They also didn’t capitalize off big defensive stops.

After a scoreless first quarter, Flowers senior quarterback Sean Johnson connected with junior tight end Matthew Ogunniyi for a 47-yard touchdown to take a 6-0 lead with just over 11 minutes remaining in the second quarter.

Wise got things going on the ensuing drive. The Pumas senior running back Christian Rawling turned the corner up the side for a 20-yard gain on the ground. However, Flowers’ defense tightened up to force a punt.

Finally late in the half, Wise made the play it needed to show life in the game. The Pumas converted a 4th-and-10 when senior quarterback Cortney Davis hooked u with senior wide receiver Joseph Tabe for 29 yards at the one-yard line. That set up a QB sneak by Davis for the game-tying touchdown. Wise took a 7-6 lead after the extra point.

Wise had a chance just before the half to extend their lead. Davis hit senior wide receiver Joseph Towler for a 57-yard pickup down to Flowers’ 28-yard line. But the Pumas failed to score, turning it over on downs. Still, they held a 7-6 lead at halftime.

In the third quarter, Flowers struck back, as Ogunniyi rolled into the end zone on a slant for a 62-yard touchdown, giving the Jaguars a 13-7 lead.

Wise stalled on offense until the fourth quarter when Davis found Tabe on a play-action pass for a 56-yard touchdown to tie the game at 13-13. In a crazy sequence, Wise was flagged for three penalties for too many people on the field in the celebration. The multitude of penalties pushed the extra point attempt to Flowers’ 48-yard line. As a result, the Pumas tried a two-point conversion that failed when Davis got sacked by senior defensive end Rocco Murray.

The Wise defense appeared to make big stops on Flowers’ ensuing drive. The Pumas thought they had an interception and later a third-down sack. But both were negated by penalties. Instead, the game went into overtime tied.

In overtime, Flowers overcame a holding penalty, to stay in field goal range. Kicker/wide receiver Quaseir Lee made the go-ahead field goal to put the Jaguars up 16-13.

Wise’s overtime possession came down to a fourth down. Flowers sent pressure to force Davis out of the pocket before he threw an incomplete pass that sealed the win for Flowers.

Wise will look to bounce back from its first loss against Suitland next Friday. Flowers will host Parkdale.
