Taylor Heinicke gets off to awful start highlighted by pick-six

Washington Commanders quarterback Taylor Heinicke made his season debut Sunday against the Green Bay Packers. He did not get off to a great start.

Heinicke missed on his first four passes. Then on the Commanders’ drive to start the second quarter, Heinicke’s pass ended up in the hands of Packers linebacker De’Vondre Campbell for an interception. Campbell then rolled 63 yards into the end zone for a pick-six.

Following the extra point, the Packers extended its lead to 14-3.

Heinicke made 15 starts last season for Washington in place of an injured Ryan Fitzpatrick. Heinicke’s production was up and down. He entered this season as a backup once again behind Carson Wentz. However, Wentz suffered a fractured finger last week against the Chicago Bears and was placed on injured reserve.

Heinicke got the first chance under center in place of Wentz ahead of rookie Sam Howell. However, the first quarter-plus of his season debut looks a lot like his downs of last season.
