Carson Wentz’s second INT leads to boos and ‘Heinicke’ chants

The Washington Commanders turned to Carson Wentz as the starting quarterback for the first time since he broke his finger in Week 6. Unfortunately, Wentz’s return against the Cleveland Browns did not go as planned.

The Commanders’ first three offensive possessions ended in turnovers to the Browns.

On the first possession, Wentz threw an interception to Browns cornerback Denzel Ward. Wentz targeted star wide receiver Terry McLaurin. However, Ward undercut the throw for the turnover.

Washington’s second possession ended in a turnover on downs when running back Jonathan Williams was stopped on a 4th-and-1 toss.

The Commanders got the football back after a goal-line stance by the defense. Yet, Wentz gave the football back to the Browns, throwing an interception into double coverage.

Wentz got booed by fans packing the Commanders’ home stadium, FedEx Field.

On the ensuing Browns possession, those same fans chanted for Washington’s backup quarterback Taylor Heinicke.

Heinicke started nine games in place of the injured Wentz. Washington won five of Heinicke’s first six starts, thrusting the Commanders into the playoff picture. However, the Commanders went 0-2-1 in the last three games, prompting head coach Ron Rivera to turn to the healthy Wentz.

If Wentz wants to remain the starter, he must turn his fortunes around. Or else, Rivera may have no choice but to give the fans what they what, more Heinicke.
