Georgetown reportedly hiring Ed Cooley as head coach

Ed Cooley will be the next men’s basketball head coach at Georgetown. Cooley is leaving Providence after 12 seasons, according to Jeff Goodman of Stadium.

Cooley is a native of Providence and resurrected the Friars basketball program with a 242-153 record. Cooley is 334-222 overall as a Division I head coach. He guided Providence to seven NCAA Tournament appearances. The Friars also captured a Big East regular season title and a Big East tournament title under Cooley.

Georgetown fired Patrick Ewing after six underwhelming seasons. Wins were hard to come by for the Hoyas under Ewing. Georgetown became the first major conference team to lose 50 games in a two-year span, including a Big East record 29 straight conference losses.

The Hoyas zeroed in on Cooley almost immediately after the firing of Ewing. Georgetown reportedly offered Cooley up to $6 million per year to poach him from their Big East rivals. Cooley made $3.8 million this season at Providence.

Cooley intends to tell the Providence players. He placed his Rhode Island home on the market on Zillow Monday morning.

Georgetown’s prestige and resources played a factor in Cooley’s decision. He also admires Hoyas’ legendary coach, the late John Thompson Jr. Cooley shares the same agent with Thompson’s two sons, John III and Ronny Thompson.

Ed Cooley steps in with the task of restoring Georgetown’s prominence. Georgetown has won the most Big East tournament championships with eight, including in 2021 under Ewing. However, the Hoyas’ last 20-win season occurred in 2014-2015, reaching the Round of 32 in the NCAA Tournament.
