Jared Bynum becomes first fallout following Ed Cooley’s Providence departure

The fallout at Providence from the departure of former head coach Ed Cooley has started. Providence guard Jared Bynum has entered the transfer portal, according to Jeff Goodman of Stadium.

Cooley accepted the head coach position at Georgetown after 12 seasons at Providence. Many expect Friars players to flood the transfer portal. Bynum becomes the first. His case is intriguing, considering he is a native of the Washington, D.C. area.

He is from Largo, Maryland, and played high school basketball at Georgetown Prep in Bethesda, Maryland. Could he follow Cooley to Georgetown?

Jared Bynum will be a redshirt senior for the 2023-24 season. He started his collegiate career at St. Joseph’s but transferred to Providence after one season. After sitting out the 2019-20 season, Bynum has played 75 games for the Friars over the past three seasons.

The 5-foot-10 Bynum helped Providence to back-to-back NCAA tournament appearances the last two seasons. The Friars reached the Sweet 16 in 2022.

This season, Bynum averaged 10.0 points and 4.3 assists in 29 games. He shot 38.4% from the field, including 31.9% from three. He was also an 83.1% free-throw shooter.

Now Bynum following Cooley to Georgetown is no lock. He has options, even those closer to his DMV home. Last season, Primo Spears dominated the ball-handling duties for the Hoyas. Spears led Georgetown with 16.0 points and 5.3 assists per game. The 6-foot-3 guard will be a junior next year, but will he enter the transfer portal following the firing of Patrick Ewing?
