Ex-Wizards player Javaris Crittenton may be released early from prison

Former Washington Wizards player Javaris Crittenton, who is serving 23 years in prison with 17 years of probation, was resentenced Thursday and is scheduled to be released immediately, per WSBTV Atlanta.

Crittenton got sentenced in 2015 in connection to a 2011 drive-by shooting that killed Julian Jones. Prosecutors alleged Crittenton was a gang member and attempted to shoot a man who robbed him a few days prior. Instead, shots struck and killed Jones.

Crittenton pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

According to the Fulton Count District Attorney’s office, a senior assistant DA consented to the new sentence in court. However, the DA office was unaware of the sentence modification hearing.

The office has since filed a motion to rescind Crittenton’s new sentence and asked for a special prosecutor to handle the case.

District Attorney Fani Willis previously represented Crittenton as a defense attorney, and her entire office has a legal conflict.

Crittenton’s new sentence for voluntary manslaughter is for twenty years and includes ten years of probation and ten years in prison commuted to time served. He also received 20 years of probation for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, which he will serve following the manslaughter sentence.

His sentencing has several other parameters, including 7,2000 hours of community service.

Crittenton starred in college at Georgia Tech. He got selected in the first round of the 2007 NBA Draft by the Los Angeles Lakers. He was traded to the Memphis Grizzlies in 2008 before being traded to the Washington Wizards later in 2008.

Javaris Crittenton played 56 games with the Wizards during the 2008-2009 season. However, he is most known for his locker room altercation in December 2009 with teammate Gilbert Arenas the following season. According to Caron Butler, Crittenton pointed a loaded gun at Arenas over a gambling disagreement. Crittenton pleaded guilty and received one-year probation on misdemeanor gun charges from the incident.

Crittenton and Arenas got suspended for the remainder of the season by NBA Commissioner David Stern. The Wizards released Crittenton shortly after the announcement of his suspension.
