The 202: Defenders Pull off United Upset, Nats Soar in Desert, No. 1 Pick Promoted

Good morning, D.C. sports fans! Grab your coffee and settle in. It was a massive weekend for the District, featuring an epic playoff upset, some fiery drama on the basketball court, and exciting news for the future of soccer in the capital.

Whether you spent your weekend down at the Navy Yard or glued to your screens, here is the Monday morning round-up of the top five sports stories you need to know from the weekend of June 6-7, 2026.

1. DC Defenders Punch Their Ticket to the United Bowl

The UFL defending champions are officially headed back to the title game! In what felt like a heavyweight bout in Daytona Beach on Sunday, the DC Defenders upset the top-seeded Orlando Storm 28-22.

The Defenders entered as the four-seed after a 5-5 regular season, having lost twice to Orlando in the previous two weeks. But the third time was the charm. Quarterback Jason Bean delivered under pressure, converting 10 crucial third downs, while kicker Matt McCrane nailed a massive 61-yard, four-point field goal to ice the game.

The best part? The DC Defenders will have home-field advantage next weekend. They host the United Bowl right here at Audi Field on Saturday, June 13, against the Louisville Kings. Secure your tickets here.

Key PerformersStats
Jason Bean (QB)18/33, 233 passing yds, 1 TD
Abram Smith (RB)11 carries, 57 rushing yds, 1 TD
Matt McCrane (K)61-yard FG (4-pointer)

2. Nationals Take the Series in the Desert

The Washington Nationals headed out west and successfully took two out of three games against the Arizona Diamondbacks at Chase Field.

The Nats exploded offensively early in the weekend, crushing the D-Backs 14-1 on Friday and following it up with a clean 6-1 victory on Saturday. Curtis Mead was the standout on Saturday, launching a two-run homer to give him five home runs in his last 13 games—matching his total from his entire first three seasons combined. Luis Garcia Jr. was the hero on Friday, hitting a two-run homer and a grand slam. While the Nats dropped Sunday’s finale 5-1, taking a road series against a tough National League West opponent is a solid weekend in the books as they hover around the .500 mark.

3. Frustrations Boil Over for the Mystics

It was a rough Saturday night in College Park for the Washington Mystics. Not only did they fall to the Atlanta Dream 109-77, but the game was marred by a heated ejection.

With just under four minutes left in the third quarter, head coach Sidney Johnson was hit with two quick technical fouls. After attempts by his assistants and players to calm him down proved unsuccessful, he was eventually escorted off the court by police. Assistant coach Emre Vatansever took over for the remainder of the game. Despite a bright spot from Kiki Iriafen, who dropped 24 points, the Dream’s offense—led by Angel Reese’s 18 points and 17 rebounds—was just too much to handle.

4. Audi Field Named Host of the 2026 NWSL Championship

In case you missed the massive news dropped right before the weekend, Washington D.C. has officially been selected to host the 2026 NWSL Championship on November 21!

Audi Field, home to our Washington Spirit and D.C. United, continues to solidify itself as a premier destination for top-tier soccer. The Spirit have routinely packed the house during their playoff runs over the last two years, and the league has taken notice. Whether the Spirit makes it to the big dance or not, the District will be the center of the women’s soccer universe this November.

5. Nationals Top Prospect Promoted to High-A

The future of the Washington Nationals’ infield continues its meteoric rise. Over the weekend, reports confirmed that 18-year-old phenom Eli Willits is officially being promoted to the High-A Wilmington Blue Rocks.

Willits, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 MLB Draft, dominated his first full half-season with the Single-A Fredericksburg Nationals. In 47 games, the switch-hitting shortstop slashed .300/.418/.500, racking up six home runs, 37 RBIs, and swiping an impressive 29 bases. Praised for an advanced plate approach which belies his age, Willits continues to prove exactly why the Nationals made him the youngest top overall selection since Ken Griffey Jr. in 1987. As the organization focuses heavily on its youth movement, tracking his development with the Blue Rocks will be one of the summer’s most exciting storylines.
