Washington Football Team defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio may not want to elaborate on his thoughts about NFL players opting out, but he has expressed his opinion on other matters quite a bit on Twitter. In June, Del Rio caused a stir with a series of controversial tweets that appeared to be in support of President Donald Trump; Charlie Kirk’s tweet calling Black Lives Matter protesters ““rioters and criminals”; and tweets suggesting NASCAR driver Bubba Wallace lied about the noose incident at Talladega Speedway.
Days before, President Trump said he would boycott the NFL if players chose to kneel during the national anthem. Players including Washington running back Adrian Peterson had spoke about kneeling as a sign of protest in wake of the deaths of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor.
Thus, Del Rio’s tweets and activity on the social media platform may be considered a cause of concern with amount of diversity and Black players inside Washington’s locker room.
Speaking to Ben Standig of the Athletic, Del Rio said he is open to having a discussion with any of his players about his opinions.
“I am open to discuss at any time with anyone my thoughts and respectfully have exchanges. It’s just not always possible in today’s environment. I think it’s important to be able to have your own opinion and respect for each other. People may have an opinion that is different than mine, which is okay. I’m okay with actually having a conversation about it with anyone, including my players.”
Del Rio has yet to have any discussion with his players about his recent tweets due to the lack of individual time permitted.
“We haven’t had any close, individual time. It certainly hasn’t been part of any group setting. I don’t anticipate there being any, but I certainly would be okay if anyone felt the need,” Del Rio said.
Del Rio has an impeccable coaching record, especially as a defensive coordinator. His hiring brought a large amount of excitement among Washington fans.
No Washington players have publicly spoken out against Del Rio’s Twitter. If any friction does come of it, a discussion or two may be in order with his players to help get on one accord going into the 2020 season.
