Dan Snyder says “Washington Football Team” could be permanent name

Could “Washington Football Team” be permanent? It’s possible says owner Dan Snyder. In an email sent to the Wall Street Journal, Snyder gives explanation of how the team name could remain Washington Football Team, permanently.

“Sure, it’s possible,” Snyder said. “If the Washington Football Team name catches on and our fans embrace it then we would be happy to have it as our permanent name. I think we have developed a very classy retro look and feel.”

After pressure to change, Washington retired its previous name and logo in July. They later decided on “Washington Football Team” as a temporary name heading into the 2020 season with a decision on a permanent name in the future.

However, Snyder’s email suggests the team could use the temporary name on a permanent basis.

Despite being on record in 2013 saying he would “never” change Washington’s name, Snyder admitted to WSJ, he considered changing the team’s name multiple times over the years. However, a “long sense of pride” in the old name prevented him from going through until now.

Snyder said the team’s previous name became a “distraction from our primary focus of football.”

Now the organization wants to move forward with a name that unifies its fans.

“We want our future name and brand to stand for something that unifies people of all backgrounds and to continue to be a source of pride for the next 100 years or more,” Snyder said.
