Wizards GM disappointed by video of John Wall flashing gang signs

John Wall has been a viral constant in recent months. Numerous videos of Wall working out have surfaced as anticipation builds ahead of his return to NBA action next season. Unfortunately, one of those videos went viral for all the wrong reasons.

While celebrating his 30th birthday in September, a video surfaced of Wall flashing gang signs.

Wall made a public apology to his fans, community and the Wizards. Speaking to Zach Lowe on The Lowe Post podcast, Wizards general manager Tommy Sheppard called the damaging video “very disappointing.”

“It’s certainly very disappointing to see something like that. Knowing the persona and character of John Wall. It’s a difficult conversation,” Sheppard said. “You can’t get framed if you aren’t in the picture. We can say that’s not who you are but if you’re in that photo, it goes around the world before you have a chance to explain.”

Fortunately, for Wall his positive image wasn’t permanently tarnished by the video.

Through his John Wall Family Foundation, Wall has been a pillar in the Washington, DC community as well as his hometown of Raleigh, NC. Among his countless contributions, Wall spearheaded #202Assist to raise rent relief money for DC residents during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Certainly doesn’t represent who John Wall really is,” Sheppard added. “If you look at the millions of dollars he’s donated to charity, the hours, and things that he does can be undone by one photo.”

Wall has been able to refocus on his task of returning from a ruptured Achilles. The five-time All-Star last played in an NBA game December 2018. However, he is expected to be ready to play when the NBA season starts this December.
