While the Washington Football Team is working to get a deal done with cornerback Ronald Darby ahead of free agency, the team is also working on a new deal with place-kicker Dustin Hopkins, according to John Keim of ESPN.
The 30-year old Dustin Hopkins has been a mainstay with Washington since joining the team in 2015. Usually reliable, Hopkins had a few hiccups during the 2020 season.
He made a career-low 79.4% of his field goal attempts last season. His struggles were highlighted from long distance. He was 15-of-21 on field goals 40 or more yards, including 2-of-4 from 50 and beyond.
Still, in a league where kickers are a dime a dozen, Hopkins has been mostly reliable alongside fellow special team specialists, long snapper Nick Sundberg and punter Tress Way.
Hopkins is still solid on extra points, making 30-of-32. He’s appeared all 16 games in each of the last three seasons. He is third all-time on Washington’s all-time scoring list.
Washington is projected to have roughly $36 million in cap space after using a $18.04 million franchise tag on All-Pro guard Brandon Scherff.
Washington wants to improve on its NFC East-winning roster. But, it’s apparent they’re interested in keeping a pair of their own with Hopkins and the aforementioned Darby.
