Ron Rivera says which position Saahdiq Charles plays is ‘up in the air’

Washington Football Team head coach Ron Rivera is unsure what position offensive lineman Saahdiq Charles will play next season, saying it’s “up in the air” according to Nicki Jhabvala of the Washington Post.

Saahdiq Charles remains one of Washington’s biggest mystery. Washington drafted him in the fourth round in 2020. His rookie season was stalled as he missed the first five games in large due to a thigh injury.

Despite playing left tackle in college at LSU, Charles made his NFL debut in Week 6 last season starting at left guard. Unfortunately, he suffered a dislocated kneecap on his second NFL snap. Washington placed him on injured reserve on Oct. 24.

Rivera added Charles is progressing nicely with his rehab of the injury.

Meanwhile, Washington may need to figure out the left side of their offensive line. Last season, the team turned to veteran Cornelius Lucas at left tackle. He started the final eight games. Following Charles’ injury, Wes Schweitzer started the last 10 games at left guard.

Washington still identifies left tackle as a position of need this offseason. It’s unclear what their plan is for left guard. Nonetheless, Charles will need to get healthy for an opportunity to carve a role whether it’s at tackle or guard.
